Who is the Greatest?

Assuredly, I say to you, among those born of women there has not risen one greater than John the Baptist; but he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.                  john 3,30Matthew 11:11

COMMENTS:

John the Baptist was called to prepare the way for Jesus’s ministry.  He preached about and pointed his followers to Jesus as the Messiah the prophets foretold.  His calling was to prepare the way for Him and then fade away.  He insisted his followers become Christ’s followers.

John’s ministry only lasted about a year.  He began his ministry and quickly gained a large following.  His preaching and sincerity and character impacted his listeners.   But when Jesus prepared for His ministry, John knew his work was nearly completed.  He may not have known his death was near, but we have some clue to believe he did.  His boldness in preaching and confrontation of King Herod for his sin with his brother’s wife, Herodias (Mark 6:14-29).  John knew such boldness had consequences but was ready and willing to pay he price.   King Herod was impacted by John’s preaching too and may have repented if it wasn’t for the influence of Herodias, his brother’s wife who Herod took to be his wife.

Sin has a way of pulling us in when we allow it to stay near us.  It’s lure and draw is irresistible when we stay close to it, even when we have not intention to.  Sin pulls us to do things we don’t want to and face consequences we never would consider or intend.  Such was the case of Herod.  He neve intended to kill John the Baptist but influence of Herodias pulled him into a position he saw no other choice.  Herod doomed himself to God’s judgment instead of accepting the path to eternal redemption John was pointing him to.

What a different story could have unfolded if Herod would have obeyed instead of just listened to John’s message. What if Herod would have become a Christ follower? What if Judas had waited, like Peter, and received Jesus’ mercy too.

Well, Jesus was born to die on the cross for our sins, but there are many who chose to reject His redemption and doomed themselves to hell that could have ended up much different.  They could have chose wisely, but influence of sin remaining near them was too strong for them to resist.  Like a strong magnet, the closer metal gets to the magnet, the stronger the pull of the magnet on it and less influence outside force has on it.  Sin is like a very strong magnet.  When we choose to keep temptation close, we set ourselves up for failure.  WE NEED TO FLEE TEMPTATION AND KEEP AS FAR AWAY FROM IT AS WE CAN (2 TIMOTHY 2:22).

God has great things planned for each one of us. Don’t let satan’s distraction get close enough to pull you off track.  If you think you are great enough to resist, YOUR WRONG!  If you think you are weak and run from temptation and into Christ’s arms, you can’t fail.  His Holy Spirit is available all the time to guide and encourage and strengthen and inspire.  Satan is no match for Him.   We can’t lose when we are near Him, but requires daily submission – surrender to the Holy Spirit’s instruction.  The Holy Spirit is God’s presence abiding in and working through us.  God the Father and God the Christ abide in us through the Holy Spirit’s presence abiding in us.
