Palm Sunday

Luke 19,40

RECOMMENDED READING: Luke 19:28-4428 And when he had thus spoken, he went before, ascending up to Jerusalem.29 And it came to pass, when he was come nigh to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount called the mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples,30 Saying, Go ye into the village over against you; in the which at your entering ye shall find a colt tied, whereon yet never man sat: loose him, and bring him hither.31 And if any man ask you, Why do ye loose him? thus shall ye say unto him, Because the Lord hath need of him.32 And they that were sent went their way, and found even as he had said unto them.33 And as they were loosing the colt, the owners thereof said unto them, Why loose ye the colt?34 And they said, The Lord hath need of him.35 And they brought him to Jesus: and they cast their garments upon the colt, and they set Jesus thereon.36 And as he went, they spread their clothes in the way.37 And when he was come nigh, even now at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen;38 Saying, Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest.39 And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke thy disciples.40 And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.41 And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it,42 Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes.43 For the days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side,44 And shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation..”

COMMENT: Have you ever misunderstood or misinterpreted events or conversation or actions and wished later you had listened or waiting longer before responding? In hindsight, we grieve with regret and vow not to make such mistakes again. The hurt done was real and words and actions in response can’t be forgotten or taken back.

Jesus triumphal entry into Jerusalem was such an event his disciples and followers celebrated with him, yet 5 days later denied or hid when crowd turned against Him and supported His arrest and Crucifixion. But on Easter morning redemption came. Christ was restored and Good News He brought was so were they.

Truth was the crowd honoring Jesus on Palm Sunday thought they were honoring a great man coming to be their King. They honored a great man and teacher and not God coming to redeem their souls. They thought they had figured out the time frame of His kingship but didn’t have a clue that He had a more urgent mission to fulfill first. One that would cost Him His Life first. For them, praising Him with palm branches was 2000 years ++ too soon or was it? If they only knew, would they have honored Him in such a way? Well, scripture indicates if they hadn’t, the very stones under Jesus feet would have shouted His praise instead (vs40).

The significance of Jesus riding on a donkey represents a King entering His city during peacetime with loyal subjects honoring Him by covering His path with their coats and with palm branches or fronds. The Pharisees watched with indignation that kindled an anger than would blind them and like-minded Jewish leadership to seeing Jesus for who He was and only wanting to get rid of Him.

They were about to witness the greatest event of history and the greatest misjustice as well. They were about to kill their God and King. They were about to get rid of, or try to, the One they had waited so long for. But they couldn’t see that and couldn’t embrace the mission this King had come to do. The mission foretold but not understood. The mission that would transform His relationship with all people and not just Jews.

After Easter, the time until Pentecost became a time of preparation for Jesus’ followers and His disciples. They would change from being the fearful weak followed Jesus had invested 3 years into and who had listened to and absorbed His teaching and witnessed His miracles. But when they not only received Jesus’ forgiveness but also His indwelling Holy Spirit, they changed and became His Bold Messengers leading countless hundreds or even thousands to Christ everywhere they went. Christianity went from being a few followers to a formidable number and even the dominant religion of the powerful Roman Empire within 200 years.

This week, take time to pray and reflect on the significance of this time and let Him guide and speak to you. Let Him prepare you for this Holy Week and this Easter. I will be doing this as well. AMEN? AMEN!
