Abundant Life

Abundant life-John 10-10

The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.  John 10:10

RECOMMENDED SCRIPTURE READING MATTHEW 7:11 – “11 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him! “

COMMENTS:  A common perception of non-Christians is that Christians do not have fun and criticize and judge those who do.  They lead a miserable life and want everyone to be miserable with them.  Maybe you have known some Christians that lack a joyful spirit, so can understand how some would believe that.

I can understand that but can’t help to also believe many use that excuse only to justify sinful behavior and sinful choices because they aren’t willing to give up their sinful lifestyle or admit they are wrong.

The truth is Christ came and died on the cross so any  who accept His gift of redemption can have life that is abundant and joyful and fulfilling (John 10:10)  There are many other verses in the New Testament that directly state that Jesus is the Christ who died and offers forgiveness and a personal relationship with Him that gives eternal life that is joyful and satisfying and fulfilling.  Life that give purpose and a positive eternal legacy instead of a life of regret as a legacy.

Christ doesn’t give a life deprived of joy but a life free from the sin that gives only misery and death.  Christians have more lasting and better fun than satan delivers through his temptations.  Sin may be enjoyable for a brief time but delivers only regrets and misery and death. If we could see clearly the consequences of sin when we are tempted, resisting temptation would be a lot easier, but satan blinds us from objectively seeing those consequences when he tempts us.  He knows he will fail.  But God gives us strength and help resisting temptation by reminding us of the truth.

Jesus described Himself as the “Good Shepherd” in John 10.  The Good Shepherd of Psalm 23 and Ezekiel 34.

Are you enjoying a personal relationship with Christ?  Does that relationship bring you joy and fulfillment and purpose?  Are you conveying that joy by your life and conduct and even in your facial expressions?   Are you telling other people by your life and personality that or are you telling other people by your life that the Christian life is miserable and need to stand clear of it?

Well, there are times even Christians feel depressed or overwhelmed or discouraged or simply angry and irritable. Even non-Christians can understand and accept that and, yes, relate to that.  But how you and I conduct ourselves and allow our hope and faith in Christ give us strength and help us manage and gain victory over those negative emotions is where our greatest witness resides.  It is how we manage those times and then act towards those we offend is a powerful witness.  How we seek and give forgiveness and treat those who hurt us that is a powerful witness.  Not giving up when we fall is powerful because such gives an honest and realistic view of Christ and how He has and continues to work in us.  Hiding our struggles and weaknesses and only showing strength is not realistic nor believable. It only encourages others to doubt our sincerity and maybe even God’s existing or at least our integrity.

Are you enjoying the joyful, abundant life in Christ that God has provided? The same God who has given us Jesus Christ will give us all other things as well (Romans 8:32).

“Too many Christians envy the sinners their pleasure and the saints their joy because they don’t have either one.”  Martin Luther
