Whine or Shine?

                          Joshua1,9

Yet the chief butler did not remember Joseph, but forgot him.  Genesis 40:23

Recommended Reading: Exodus 15:22-2722 So Moses brought Israel from the Red Sea; then they went out into the Wilderness of Shur. And they went three days in the wilderness and found no water. 23 Now when they came to Marah, they could not drink the waters of Marah, for they were bitter. Therefore the name of it was called Marah. 24 And the people complained against Moses, saying, “What shall we drink?” 25 So he cried out to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a tree. When he cast it into the waters, the waters were made sweet. There He made a statute and an ordinance for them, and there He tested them, 26 and said, “If you diligently heed the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in His sight, give ear to His commandments and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have brought on the Egyptians. For I am the Lord who heals you.”27 Then they came to Elim, where there were twelve wells of water and seventy palm trees; so they camped there by the waters.”

COMMENTS:  The opposite of grumbling, we would think, is contentment but it is really gratitude.  Only gratitude will quench and impatient complaining that irritates and hinders our faith.  Conversely, gratitude fills our minds with memories of past ways God has been faithful and encourages us to continue to put our faith in Him.   Gratitude strengthens not only our faith but builds patience as we wait for Him to respond.  Joseph endured an unjust prison judgment, accused of a crime he did not commit.  But his faith in God and determination to remain faithful to Him is vital.  We are not told of any doubts he may have had as he waited but have to believe doubts did haunt him some days.  But he refused to yield to them and remained faithful.  Results was both God’s willingness to reveal things he could not otherwise know in order to place him in a position one day of power and authority second only the Pharaoh in Egypt.  Result was opportunity to save both Egypt and his own family from starvation due to a coming great drought that would last  7 years.  But God wanted to do so much more.  To bring redemption to Joseph’s brothers even though they didn’t deserve it and also to Joseph restoration to his family by enabling and empowering him to forgive them.  Joseph enjoyed that restoration all his remaining life.  But generations later, Moses and his people had to endure slavery and abuse at the hand of a Pharaoh who forgot about Joseph or the great service he did for Egypt.

When Moses lead the Israelites out of slavery and out of Egypt,   it was a time of great celebration and expressions of gratitude and worship and praise.  They witnesses the miracles of the 10 plagues, the parting of the Red Sea and the Pillar of fire defeating the great Egyptian army .  But  every step they would quickly begin complaining when food or water was in short supply.   God consistently supplied but would wait to see if they would trust Him or complain.  Each and every time of testing, they complained.  They quickly forgot God’s faithfulness and past proof of His faithfulness.   They refused to praise and worship Him when future remained uncertain.  But it  was certain because God was guiding them.   They could have immediately gone into promised land instead of wondering in the desert for 40 years if they only had praised instead of complained and followed Caleb’s and Joshua’s advice instead of the other 10 spies.

Before we get too critical of them, we need to  reflect and discover how much we too complain and are of weak faith too.  Adversity tests our faith and if weak, we are equally vulnerable to whine instead of shine too.   But God calls us to shine during prosperity and shine during adversity.  By doing so, we are a witness to God’s faithfulness and ambassadors to the world around us of His faithfulness.   When we whine, we discourage others coming to Christ.   When we shine, we encourage them to do so, so consequences of doubts reach out beyond ourselves, making responsibility to shine great on our shoulders.  The consequences of not shines is equally on our shoulders too.

The Israelites grumbled and murmured and complained every step of the way from Egypt to the Promised Land, incurring God’s wrath. James 5:9 says, “Do not grumble against one another.” Jude 16 warns about those who are “grumblers, complainers, walking according to their own lusts.”

God longs to work within us, so we may obtain His quality of patience—the ability to handle delays with grace and gratitude, not with griping and grumbling.

“Grumbling and gratitude are, for the child of God, in conflict.”  Billy Graham
