That Glorious Day

                  1 thess 5,2

For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night.
1 Thessalonians 5:2

RECOMMENDED SCRIPTURE 1 THESSALONIANS 5:1-11  “But concerning the times and the seasons, brethren, you have no need that I should write to you. For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night. For when they say, “Peace and safety!” then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labor pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape. But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk are drunk at night. But let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation. For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 who died for us, that whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with Him.”

COMMENTS:  Some sincere Christians, even Christian scholars and theologians spend a lifetime trying to determine when Christ is returning, setting dates or at least general time frames of expectations of His return.  Truth is, every generation since that first Easter have believed they would see Christ’s return before their death.  But consider if they had, we would not have been born or have had the opportunity to experience His Grace too.  Paul’s insight in today’s scripture reminds us that Christ’s promise to return was intended to give us hope and courage and motivation to continue and be faithful.   We are to serve Him as though He was returning today but consistently and persistently our entire lives.   After all, wouldn’t to be far better for us to endure living in this world a few more years if it meant our loved ones coming to faith?  Well, that has been the case in every generation since Christ’s resurrection!  Being prepared for His imminent return but working and planning for many years of service.

Consider the level of persecution and determine effort Paul’s enemies had to kill Him.  Paul didn’t know if the next day would mean his death or if he would be able to minister for many more years.  He lived as though each day was his last while planning and doing God’s will as though he would do so for many more years.  Because he did continue for many more years, we have his letters to enjoy and teaching to read and be blessed by today, but God would have found another way for us to have his insights if he had died early in his ministry.    God never lets satan win or get the upper hand for long.  He never has and never will.

When the apostle Paul planted a church in Thessalonica, he had little time to establish the new believers in their faith. According to Acts 17:2, he was driven from town by a persecuting mob after two or three weeks of teaching. But evidently Paul left the Thessalonians with a deep belief in our Lord’s return. They were so eager to learn more about the Second Coming that Paul wrote two letters to them—1 and 2 Thessalonians—answering questions and strengthened their anticipation for the Lord’s soon appearing in the clouds of glory.

Those letters are for us too. They are full of information about the Rapture of the Church, the resurrection of the dead, and the return of Christ.

Imagine how excited those early believers were to receive Paul’s letters and soak in his teaching. We, too, should eagerly digest every word in Scripture about our Lord’s promised return, to better anticipate the moment of His coming for us. How differently we’d live if, like the Thessalonians, our hearts were seized with anticipation for that glorious day!

So will Christ return before my generation dies?  Before I die, who currently am 68?  I am anticipating so, but only He knows and only He decides.  I am glad if He delays, especially if in delay more come to Him.  I know my time on earth is far less than what I’ve spent thus far, so either seeing Him at my passing or at my Rapture, it really doesn’t matter to me.  Either way I will be with Him for eternity.  I pray such is true for you too.  AMEN?  AMEN!

I am waiting for the coming of the Lord who died for me; / Oh, His words have thrilled my spirit, and “I will come again for thee.”
