Abraham – An Imperfect Faithful Father

                          James 3,23

And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” And he was called the friend of God.  James 2:23

Recommended Reading: Genesis 15:1-6 “After these things the word of the Lord came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward. And Abram said, Lord God, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus? And Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir. And, behold, the word of the Lord came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir. And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be.And he believed in the Lord; and he counted it to him for righteousness.”

COMMENTS:  Righteous, in scripture, doesn’t mean perfect or sinless.  Instead it means “make right”.  God made Abram right in His eyes by forgiving Him and guiding him to become faithful and obedient.  Abram disobeyed God when had a child with Hagar.  He and Sarah doubted His promise because they were too old to have a child.  They could believe God for believable promises but had doubts about impossible promises.  But that is not the end of the story.  Isaac was born and fulfilled God’s promise to Abram.  God then changed Abram’s name to Abraham.  Abraham was still an imperfect man learning to trust God.  His greatest test would come later when God commanded Abraham to sacrifice his son.  Not until he was willing and began to obey was God satisfied and gave a substitute.

God told Abram He would take care of him, but took time and proof to convince Abraham.  God had to convince Abraham that He was trustworthy and He DID!!

We have plenty of examples from scripture, examples from our family history and country’s history and even our own personal history to convince us God is Faithful and keeps His Promises.  Will we believe Him and act accordingly?   Hanging from a ¼” rope 3 feet off the ground is one thing but trusting that same rope at 1000 feet off the ground is something else.  God may satisfy our doubt by giving you a 1” rope instead but sometimes He asks us to trust the ¼” is strong enough to hold us at 1000-foot height.

So, is your faith 1” or do you have ¼” faith?  Jesus has called His disciples His friends.  Are you a friend of God or an enemy?   Are you a faithful friend or a casual friend?   He is a faithful friend to you and deserves no less and far more than our faithful friendship.

Follow Abraham’s example as a faithful father by deepening your friendship with God.
