Our First Day in Heaven

            1 Corinthian 2,9

I think it is right to refresh your memory as long as I live in the tent of this body, because I know that I will soon put it aside.  2 Peter 1:13-14, NIV

RECOMMENDED SCRIPTURE 2 Corinthians 5:1-8  “For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven:If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked. For we that are in this tabernacle do groan, being burdened: not for that we would be unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality might be swallowed up of life. Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God, who also hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit. Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord:(For we walk by faith, not by sight:)We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.”

COMMENTS:  What will our first day  in heaven be like?  Who will we meet?  What sights will we see and smell and hear?  How will we feel?  What will it be like to inhabit a youthful body once again?    Well, our bodies will be stronger and healthier and better in every way than our human bodies were at our prime.  Those of us entering the “senior – golden years” will notice and appreciate that even more.   The glimpses of heaven we have in scripture reveal heaven will be vaster and more beautiful and wonderful than anything we can imagine or hope for.     The absence of evil and temptation and access to Christ will make heaven far more wonderful and beautiful and enjoyable than we can imagine.  But we must not forget heaven is all about Him and not about us.  He will be greeting   with open loving arms but we will see Him and worship and honor Him for who He is and what He has done.   We will see clearly the magnitude of sacrifice He made and the magnitude of eternal difference that sacrifice in our eternal future.    A future in heaven with him and other forgiven loved ones instead of eternal misery and regret alone in Hell.   Some have said they would rather be in hell with loved ones than in heaven with strangers.  Well, truth is we will not have access in hell to our love ones who also are there.

Can you imagine being totally alone with no one to talk to? I’m sure there have been times peace and quiet sounded appealing but to imagine an eternity with no one to talk to is too horrible to imagine.   We are warned of the regrets and suffering that will be experienced in hell.  Jesus story of Lazarus and the rich man give us a glimpse of that suffering.

If we look at how the first century Christians faced their death, as have Christian martyrs in generations since, we can conclude they all were confident of Christ’s promises of heaven and confident of their salvation.  Not confident by their deeds or merits but confident because they accepted Christ’s gift of redemption.  Peter wrote his final letter shortly before his executing by crucifixion.  2 Peter 3:13-14 13 Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.14 Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.”

Hardship and suffering and even crisis and tragedy are common to every family and will be endured to some degree by all of us at some time in our lives. But it is in such time our faith is tested and proved genuine or false.  There is no place for pretending or putting up a good front during such times.

When we take the perspective of eternity vs a few years in earth, and the perspective of heaven vs earth’s miseries and rampant evil, especially as we age and see less quality human life in our future, then heaven and importance of heaven become more real.  Likewise, as we discover we know more people in heaven than we know still alive, then we realize how much heaven is already our home – more so than the place we have called home for our lifetime here.

During difficult times, the hope of eternity gives us strength. If you’re prone to worry yourself to sleep each night, turn your thoughts upward and close your eyes thinking of heaven and its eternal throne.

A tent or a cottage, why should I care? They’re building a palace for me over there.
