Praying or Preying?

His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life. 2 Peter 1:3, NIV
Recommended Reading: PSALM 1 “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.4 The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.5 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.6 For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.”

COMMENTS: Today’s devotion shares an experience of a family in Virginia who brought home a Christmas tree for the Holiday season. They decorated the tree and were admiring it until they discovered the tree was infested with preying mantis eggs. Hundreds of preying mantises began appearing all over their home as Christmas Day approached. They decided to use an artificial tree, but had to deal with the distraction that year.
The mantises prey on other insects, which make them of benefit in spring among flowers and plants those insects would eat or prey on. So in the winter preying mantises would be a pest while in spring or summer preying mantises would be considered an asset for a flower or vegetable garden because of the work they do.
Today’s scripture compares God’s people to trees planted near a river so they can access needed water at an accessible source. Our thoughts and deeds / lives reflect the resources we access. If we access resources that feed on our nutrients, they bring death into our lives and deeds, but if we access resources that give us nutrients, they bring life into our lives and deeds.
Christ-like deeds and thoughts bring life but evil satan inspired deeds and thoughts bring death. It is as simple and profound as that. Christ provides redemption as the only path back to life from a path to death, but we must choose His path to live and follow that path He provides. We can still choose death, but we have another – better option since Easter Sunday.
The psalmist tells us the path to life involves letting the Word of God dwell in our minds and souls, meditating on it day and night. Truth is, if God’s Word dominate our mind during the day while we work, it will automatically dominate our mind while we sleep. How many times have you pondering an important decision, going over the options and choices while weighing the pros and cons of each choice as you fall asleep at night and find next morning when you awake to have a clearer direction with right choice being clear.
Romans 12:2 tells us to renew our minds. “2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” We do so by feeding on His Word instead of “preying on others” and by praying to Him instead of “preying on others”
Apply yourself wholly to the Scriptures, and apply the Scriptures wholly to yourself.
