Don’t Be Conformed

romans 12,2a

And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. Romans 12:2

RECOMMENDED READING: PSALM 119:9-16 “How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word.10 I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands.11 I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.12 Praise be to you, LORD;teach me your decrees.13 With my lips I recount all the laws that come from your mouth.14 I rejoice in following your statutes as one rejoices in great riches.15 I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways.16 I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word..”
COMMENTS: We are living in a time of situational and relative morality and standards for right and wrong. Standards set by society instead of by God are a moving but a degrading standard. Standards of right and wrong are much lower and “tolerant” than 50 or even 20 years ago. Even the term “tolerant” has changed from being accepting to being in agreement and approving. Intolerance does no longer mean rejecting but now includes accepting but still not agreeing with. But, the new definition of “intolerance” is bringing more and more severe punishments or reactions not based on evidence but by even unverified accusations.
Well, scripture warns us against conforming to the world’s standards. Today’s scripture from Romans 12 give us God’s Wisdom and command to draw near to Christ and follow His standard and example instead. To open ourselves to His transforming spirit and influence. The Holy Spirit is available and willing to come into the life of any and every willing believer
Likewise, Psalm 119 remind us of importance of choosing a path of purity, by God’s standard, while we are young. But doing so is vital now, whether young or old. We can’t turn back the clock but we can start where and when we are. Change is at best extremely difficult and at worse impossible, but God passionately wants to and is offering to help us do the impossible and succeed at both very difficult and impossible. Satan is passionate at hindering and keeping us from changing to God’s path. But satan’s path leads to misery and death. God’s path leads to joy and life. Holding to God’s standard and guiding and encouraging and teaching God’s path is not intolerance but acting in compassion with a desire to bring life in place of death.
Striving to become Christ-like is the goal but critical and key is drawing closer to Christ and seeking His Holy Spirit in our lives to guide and council and strengthen us. Abiding in Him and sustaining a daily fellowship with Him through His Word, through prayer, and through His abiding Holy Spirit while developing close relationship with other believers and local church all help strengthen and empower us. But serving and reaching out into our community and neighbors and beyond is where our mission field and ministry lies and awaits us. It is for there He is preparing us to serve and honor and worship Him. It is there we will make an eternal difference for good.
J. B. Phillips paraphrased Romans 12:2: “Don’t let the world around you squeeze you into its own mold, but let God re-mold your minds from within, so that you may prove in practice that the plan of God for you is good, meets all his demands and moves towards the goal of true maturity.” The world (empowered by the devil) wants to conform every person into a godless image. Instead, we are to renew our mind with God’s Word daily so we can resist the pressures of sin, the world, and the devil.
The Bible was not given for our information but for our transformation. D. L. Moody
