True Love Demonstrated by Sacrifice

                                    ephesians 4,2

Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.  John 15:13

RECOMMENDED READING: Romans 12:1  “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service”

COMMENTS:  Old Testament identifies sacrifice as killing an unblemished – acceptable animal to take punishment for sins.   New Testament identifies Christ as our perfect sacrifice taking the punishment for our sins.  Christ exampled for us the perfect – ultimate sacrifice that was undeserved but motivated out of His love for us.

But there are plenty of examples of sacrificial love all around us if we take time to notice. Parents sacrificing time and money for their children providing homes and meals and clothes and security of a stable family setting but most of all love.

The Twin Towers on 911 was a time of many firefighters and even co-workers sacrificing their lives in order to safe another.

What about the individuals who give up a kidney or part of their liver or a lung in order to provide a needed part for a family member.  Then, what about those who do so for someone they don’t even know?  What inspires or motivates someone to make great sacrifices for others they don’t even know?  It is one thing to do so for a parent or a child or for a brother or sister or for a best friend, but something else to do so for another in need with no personal connecting relationship.

Jesus illustrated Christ-like love with the parable of the “Good Samaritan” told to us (Luke 10:25-37) illustrating call to see people as He sees them, both like minded people and even enemies or those we do not like or even hate.  Christ showed great compassion toward children but also to harlots and Roman soldiers and Samaritans.  He showed great compassion to pagans as well as Jews.   He died on the cross for the sins of everyone rich and poor, powerful – strong and weak and powerless, those successful in the world’s eyes and those they judge failures, those who broke man’s and God’s laws and those who were faithful to be lawful citizens.  He viewed all as sinful – falling short of God’s example and God’s standard.

The example Christ lived and examples He taught and told parables to explain are of the true sacrificial Love only God can instill and inspire and empower.  When we look at example demonstrated by early Christians and by born again Christians since, we see a more common demonstrated self sacrificing love Christ taught.  Granted, there are noteworthy exceptions by those who either were only nominal Christians or those who weakened and failed to do so.  Granted, some are more difficult to love than others.  Likewise, love (as described in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7) describes conduct that has others best interest at heart, even “tough love” that encourages others to turn away from self-destructive behavior and choices and from choices that brings harm to others.

Well, I think today’s devotion reminds us the value and importance of loving others sacrificially – like Christ did – like faithful Christians have since that first  Easter.  The benefits to our relationship with Christ, the benefit to our influence on others, the benefit to welfare of others, the benefit God will empower to spread far beyond our direct influence will all make any short term suffering or sacrifice well worth it.  Even paying the ultimate sacrifice will be worth it if made at request from God.  Some religions call on others to make that sacrifice by killing others, but Christ is calling us to sacrifice to bring life (eternal life) to others and not death.

Let’s look today for a way to demonstrate sacrificial love for the sake of God’s glory or the good of another.

“If Jesus Christ be God and died for me, then no sacrifice can be too great for me to make for Him.”  C. T. Studd
