Behind the Hearth

Is not My word like a fire?   Jeremiah 23:29

RECOMMENDED SCRIPTURE READING:  Jeremiah 20:7-13  “ O Lord, You induced me, and I was persuaded; You are stronger than I, and have prevailed.I am in derision daily; Everyone mocks me.For when I spoke, I cried out;I shouted, “Violence and plunder!”Because the word of the Lord was made to meA reproach and a derision daily. Then I said, “I will not make mention of Him, Nor speak anymore in His name.”But His word was in my heart like a burning fireShut up in my bones;I was weary of holding it back,And I could not.10 For I heard many mocking:“Fear on every side!”“Report,” they say, “and we will report it!”All my acquaintances watched for my stumbling, saying,“Perhaps he can be induced; Then we will prevail against him, And we will take our revenge on him.”11 But the Lord is with me as a mighty, awesome One.Therefore my persecutors will stumble, and will not prevail. They will be greatly ashamed, for they will not prosper.Their everlasting confusion will never be forgotten.12 But, O Lord of hosts,You who test the righteous,And see the mind and heart,Let me see Your vengeance on them; For I have pleaded my cause before You.13 Sing to the Lord! Praise the Lord! For He has delivered the life of the poorFrom the hand of evildoers.”

COMMENTS:  You and I are living in a war zone. Our earth is a battle zone. Our enemy is satan who is doing all he can to hinder God’s Work and Will and to keep us from a relationship with Christ.  He does this by distracting us from Him and tempting us to sin. The news is full of his mischief and our communities, our families, and even our churches.  Why?   Because even forgiven Christians fail to sustain a close relationship with Christ and are easily distracted by temptation and problems.  It takes discipline to focus on Christ.   Like Peter walking on water toward Christ.  He was secure as long as he kept his eyes on Christ, but sank when looked at the storm.  He failed to stay focused on Christ.   So do we too.

Pilgrim’s Progress was written by Paul Bunyan in 1672 while he was in prison. Imprisoned for preaching the Gospel. The established church was corrupt and self serving.   Church leadership had become like the Jewish leadership of Christ’s day.

But the journey Christian experienced in Bunyan’s book reflects and journey every Christian faces, both in Bunyan’s time and especially today.

It seems like evil is getting stronger and good is getting weaker.  Is evil winning the battle over good?  Is satan winning?  Well, remember Rome seemed to win for awhile.   Hitler was successful for a short time.   Evil has a brief time of success but never ends well.  Good, by contrast, often does not show benefit or success for awhile but will eventually.   Why is that?  Maybe because God tests us to be faithful to Him and trust Him and not just responding to “the path of least resistance” or just taking the easiest path.  Difficult paths require determination and will to succeed.          Difficult paths require dependence on others.  They build strength and character.  They help give preparation for even more difficult paths.    But most of all, such paths help train us to rely on and trust Christ in much deeper and surrendered ways.

The journey Christian took in Pilgrim’s Progress built strength – built character – built a deeper relationship and dependence and love for Christ.  A journey that also built greater discernment and strength to recognize and reject satan’s temptations and snare designed to entrap and weaken, not strengthen.

By studying the journey of those before us, we learn from  their experience.  We too learn how to discern evil snares and temptations, we learn how to access and enjoy fellowship with the Holy Spirit  as a powerful resource to keep us on path, we are energized and inspired by their successful journey completion, we are drawn to Christ and gain trust and inspired to love Him  too.

Christ promised to never leave or forsake us.  The Holy Spirit came with assurance to be our guide and comforter and helpmate 24x7x365 without fail or break.  As we look at Christ followers of past and present, we gain confidence of a successful destination and faithful help by Christ to that destination.  They did not have an easy path but a path worth taking. But like them, we need to make sure our hearts are always blazing with fresh truths and nourishment from God’s Word.

No word ever spoken by God to His own was ever yet broken; ‘Tis firm as His throne.”
