Turn Over a New Leaf  without Gossip

                    prov 20,19 gossip

They learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house, and not only idle but also gossips and busybodies, saying things which they ought not.  1 Timothy 5:13

RECOMMENDED READING:  James 3:2-10For we all stumble in many things. If anyone does not stumble in word, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body. Indeed, we put bits in horses’ mouths that they may obey us, and we turn their whole body. Look also at ships: although they are so large and are driven by fierce winds, they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot desires. Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things.

See how great a forest a little fire kindles! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell. For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and creature of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by mankind. But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God. 10 Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so.”

COMMENTS:  Have you ever been hurt by false gossip.   Maybe someone saw you doing something or saying something to someone and heard part of a conversation and made an incorrect conclusion instead of first learning all the facts. Why is it so appealing to discover and share gossip?  Gossip by definition is “casual or unconstrained conversation or reports about other people, typically involving details that are not confirmed as being true.”

Notice that gossip is unconstrained and unconfirmed conversation. When you have conversation with others, I feel a barrier go up and alarms go off in my soul when tempted to share something I know would be hurtful if shared.  Something inside me acts as a restraint when tempted to share information that either is not known to be true or would harm someone if shared.  Then the rational is to also say “don’t tell this to anyone else” as a way of justifying breaking a confidence.  Why would we still want to continue?  Well, for those like me who find it difficult to sustain conversation or find it difficult to find things to talk about, such temptations are strong just to sustain enjoyable conversation with others and to be social and friendly. Such is true when talking with someone who also finds it difficult to caring on conversation.  But also true, when talking with one who does carry conversation easily, the other temptation is to share secrets in order to compete with equal interesting conversation with those folks.  Either way, we must not forget the benefit we hope to gain from sharing confidences or harmful gossip is very short lived and always outweighed by consequence of loss of trust in us and consequence of irreparable damage to others that gossip causes.  We tend to forget that when temptation is strong but remember it so clearly after gossip is given.

Proverbs 21:23 says, “Whoever guards his mouth and tongue keeps his soul from troubles.” Such wise and life giving advice.  But such wise not only need to guide us when in the midst of temptation but needs to become the impulse or first reaction when we are confronted by gossip from others as well  as when tempted to share gossip we heard or discovered to others.

Let God’s wisdom be your impulse.
