Fuel for the Fire

In the multitude of words sin is not lacking, but he who restrains his lips is wise.
Proverbs 10:19

Recommended Reading:  Proverbs 26:20-21 Where there is no wood, the fire goes out; And where there is no talebearer, strife ceases.21 As charcoal is to burning coals, and wood to fire, So is a contentious man to kindle strife..”

COMMENTS: Have you known groups or individuals who seem to thrive on finding and exploiting strife in others?  They have a way of pushing other’s “buttons”, especially with family and friends and co-workers they know and claim to love.   Doing such is like putting wood on a fire or even gasoline on a fire in emotional conditions.

The only way to put out a fire is to remove one of 3 things fire needs:  heat, oxygen, fuel.   Satan does all he can to keep the 3 ingredients for us to continue sinning:  temptation, lack of God’s presence, and self pride.  When we take our eyes off satan and on Christ, it is like putting water on the fire of sin (removing heat of).  When we run from temptation, we move away from the fuel fire needs to burn.  Putting dirt on a fire removes oxygen.   As we develop a closer relationship with the Holy Spirit,

When we reflect on the harm and damage the “button pushers” do either deliberately or unintentional, we begin to discover the evil it is and destructive potential it has.  How many lives and families have been destroyed? Likewise, such needless harm can end when buttons are no longer pushed and harmful words go silent.

Proverbs 26:20Where there is no wood, the fire goes out; and where there is no talebearer, strife ceases.”

Proverbs 10:19Sin is not ended by multiplying words, but the prudent hold their tongues.”

James 1:19 “1My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.”

Proverbs 12:23 “The prudent keep their knowledge to themselves,
but a fool’s heart blurts out folly.”

Words hurt like physical harm cannot, causing unseen wounds that cannot heal on their own.  But words can also heal more quickly than physical wounds can be healed too.  Ask God to give you wisdom to be silent when needed but also to speak words of healing when also needed.  Words that bless and build others up.  Words inspired by His abiding Holy Spirit.    What would the world be like if everyone were silent or spoke as God directed?  What would the world be like if even the 4 scriptures noted above from James and Proverbs were followed for a week by everyone in our family, everyone in our church, everyone in our community?   I dare say our community would be on the news reporting the positive change such a commitment made.  I dare say old relationships would be restored and many other wonderful things would become evident.

So, how about you and I covenant with God to make this a deliberate focus for the next week and see what happens.  Silent when others irritate or push our buttons.  Giving words of encouragement when others buttons are pushed.  Being alert when tempted to say a thoughtless or hurtful word and stay silent.   Being in prayer before respond when witness another saying or doing a hurtful word or thing.   Being an example that will encourage better behavior in others even if that example is not received and followed right away or ever.                                                                                                                                                          “A sanctified heart is better than a silver tongue.”  Thomas Brooks
