Bring Them Up in Love

proverb 3,12

And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.”  Ephesians 6:4

RECOMMENDED SCRIPTURE READING:  PROVERBS 3:11-12  “ 11 My son, despise not the chastening of the Lord; neither be weary of his correction:12 For whom the Lord loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.”

COMMENTS:  Child abuse has so jaded society that it has become difficult to discern valid discipline from abuse.  Parental authority and wise discernment is given by God so the further we descend from a close relationship with God, the harder it becomes to exercise wise and healthy and therapeutic discipline of our children.  The pendulum swings from lack of or inadequate discipline to child abuse with excessive discipline given in anger.  Therefore, the wisdom of today’s devotion title “Bring Them Up in Love” reminds us not to discipline while angry and allow cool heads but also the Holy Spirit’s Wise Council guide child discipline instead of anger or frustration.

Well, both children and parents still become angry and frustrated with each other.  Such has always been even from Adam’s children.  Galatians 6:7 reminds parents not to provoke their children to anger, but Hebrews 12:5-6 tells parents to administer discipline firmly but with love as God disciplines us.

As I reflect, I can recall many mistakes I made in raising our children, but overall we’re so grateful and pleased with how our two children turned out. God has a wonderful way of healing and limiting frequency and consequences of parental errors and deficiencies.  However, if parents refuse to seek and follow God’s council and repeat poor parenting habits without change, the consequences become worse and harder to overcome or heal.  The world is running over with such destructive examples but there are those who have been miraculously healed and transformed.  The cycle of poor parents begetting poor children who become poor parents is broken when either the parent or child, or better – both, turn from those poor habits and let God in and His Holy Spirit abide with and guide and help.

We have God’s word to give us wise council of Psalms and Proverbs and countless other places + countless examples of both good and foolish parenting + many examples from our own neighborhoods and families.  But most of all we have available as a resource Immanuel (God with us) forgiving and guiding and helping us one on one 24x7x365.  We also have family and brothers and sisters in Christ all willing to lend a hand.  We are not intended to live and parent alone.  The sooner we seek help and use that help the better.
