Wise Counsel

        proverbs 15,22

Without counsel, plans go awry, but in the multitude of counselors they are established.
Proverbs 15:22

Recommended Reading Proverbs 20:1-29: “Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise. The fear of a king is as the roaring of a lion: whoso provoketh him to anger sinneth against his own soul.It is an honour for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling. The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing.Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out. Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find? The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him.A king that sitteth in the throne of judgment scattereth away all evil with his eyes.Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?10 Divers weights, and divers measures, both of them are alike abomination to the Lord.11 Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.12 The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the Lord hath made even both of them.13 Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; open thine eyes, and thou shalt be satisfied with bread.14 It is naught, it is naught, saith the buyer: but when he is gone his way, then he boasteth.15 There is gold, and a multitude of rubies: but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.16 Take his garment that is surety for a stranger: and take a pledge of him for a strange woman.17 Bread of deceit is sweet to a man; but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.18 Every purpose is established by counsel: and with good advice make war.19 He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips.20 Whoso curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness.21 An inheritance may be gotten hastily at the beginning; but the end thereof shall not be blessed.22 Say not thou, I will recompense evil; but wait on the Lord, and he shall save thee.23 Divers weights are an abomination unto the Lord; and a false balance is not good.24 Man’s goings are of the Lord; how can a man then understand his own way?25 It is a snare to the man who devoureth that which is holy, and after vows to make enquiry.26 A wise king scattereth the wicked, and bringeth the wheel over them.27 The spirit of man is the candle of the Lord, searching all the inward parts of the belly.28 Mercy and truth preserve the king: and his throne is upholden by mercy.29 The glory of young men is their strength: and the beauty of old men is the grey head.”

COMMENTS: The above proverb is packed with powerful wisdom which seems to be foreign to or lacking in present day common sense.  Bible prophecy even tells us in the latter days good will be judged as evil and evil good (2 Timothy 3 – note vs 13).  We live in times of amazing technology available to most worldwide that were beyond even the dreams and imagination of kings and most wealthy and powerful even 100 years ago.  But people have not changed over the many centuries since this proverb was written. As much as some would deny or ignore wisdom and morality dictated by God’s Laws, truth is the only way to a sustainable happy and prosperous life is by following God’s wisdom and council.  Likewise, man left to his own devices, will inevitably decay to evil and lack of decent – moral behavior.  Man would rather justify his own evil – prideful – selfish behavior than turn from it and towards repentance and obedience of God’s life giving laws and moral code.   But history repeatedly shows us God’s Laws bring life and happiness and prosperity and man’s (satan’s) ways always brings misery and pain and death and desperate poverty.  Every generation must learn and choose but each generation will naturally choose evil and death without God’s help and God’s Spirit’s continuing nudging and reminders.

2.5 million people work for the United State f federal government under the authority of the President’s cabinet.  The President is surrounded by this cabinet and his Vice President and an army of military heads and other expert councelors ready to inform him and councel him on all matters demanding his leadership and decisions.  One man is not able to consistently make wise decisions, so he must seek council but still must discern wise from foolish councel. If he seeks and exposes himself to wise councel in scripture and seeks input from the Holy Spirit frequently, he can do much better.  But if he still allows himself to be exposed to councelors who keep giving him foolish council or refuse to also seek wise council from scripture and the Holy Spirit, then he makes himself more vulnerable to repeat the disasters of past history.  Even Solomon succumbed to foolish councel of pagan wives and the pagan councelors they kept exposing Solomon too.  The consequences of that folly are revealed in scripture suffered not only by him but by his family and the nation he ruled.

Think about foolish choices you and I have made and consequences they brought.

Well, there is nothing we can do about past but we can repent, seek God’s mercy and help, and change – go a new and better path.  Who are your wise counselors? What kind of access do you allow them in your life? Purpose to make 2019 a year of wise counsel.
