Let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God   James 1:19-20

Recommended Reading: James 1:16-20 116 Do not err, my beloved brethren.17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.18 Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.19 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:20 For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.”

COMMENTS:   Have you heard the old expression “Turning over a new leaf?”  I always thought it meant, like most, to refer to turning over a tree or other plant leaf.  The back side of a plant leaf is shaped the same but looks quite different.  But I learned this morning the expression comes from the 1500’s and refers to a new blank page and starting over.  Leaves in that time referred to pages of a book, so expression refers to starting over or at least going in a new direction instead of continuing on in the same direction.

January is a popular time to focus on fixing or overcoming problems or weaknesses or consequences created by poor choices.  Making better choices and fixing problems of previous choices is or can be an overwhelming task or goal, especially if trying to overcome habits and resist temptations that have become a regular and maybe enjoyable part of our lifestyle.  Hard enough to fix some of the consequences but even more difficult trying to resist those temptations causing or leading to those consequences.

Anger is one of those emotions that will control us if we don’t learn to first control it and then to conquer it.  Anger can be used to generate energy and passion and focus to address a specific problem of injustice or abuse or problem.  But Anger more commonly only overpowers wisdom and restraint to saying harsh words and overreactions resulting in damaged or broken relationships and inviting a similar reaction from others.

Anger unchecked results in individual doing or saying hurtful things or even murder, which would not be considered even in the same circumstances otherwise.   How many tragedies resulted from unrestrained anger?  Consider the regret you have and how many started or were inspired by anger?    Likely those regret and reason for those regrets would have been avoided if only you had taken a deep breathe and maybe counted to 10 or 100 to let your anger cool down before responding.  Thinking before acting.   Unrestrained anger leads to self destruction like the above picture shows.

Consider  James 1:19-20 “My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires” (NIV).

The best way of turning over some new leaves is by leaving anger behind—and the leaves of Scripture can help you with that.
