Temptation vs. Truth

2 corinthians 10,5

“But [Jesus] answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’””  Matthew 4:4

Recommended Reading:  2 Corinthians 10:3-11  “For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. And we will be ready to punish every act of disobedience, once your obedience is complete. You are judging by appearances.[a] If anyone is confident that they belong to Christ, they should consider again that we belong to Christ just as much as they do. So even if I boast somewhat freely about the authority the Lord gave us for building you up rather than tearing you down, I will not be ashamed of it. I do not want to seem to be trying to frighten you with my letters. 10 For some say, “His letters are weighty and forceful, but in person he is unimpressive and his speaking amounts to nothing.” 11 Such people should realize that what we are in our letters when we are absent, we will be in our actions when we are present.”

COMMENTS: Dr. David Jeremiah, in his morning radio program shared a true story of a manager who started every work morning privately in his office in prayer on his knees before accepting phone calls or receiving visitors or appointments.   The president of the company he worked for showed up early but the manager’s secretary told the president to    wait.  That president didn’t accept that answer and barged into that manager’s office to find him on his knees in prayer.  He quietly and reverently backed out of his office and went back to that secretary.  He asked her if he prayed that way every morning.  She said yes.  Then he said “No wonder I needed to come to him asking for advice”

How do others depend on us and how effectively do we convey our core values and world view?  How Christ-like are we living and how well do we convey Christ’s character and wisdom?  Well, I have to admit some days better than others and all too often not well at all.  Truth is, the closer we get to Him, the more like Him we become but discover more about Him we still need to become more like.  While times when problems and temptations attack us, it is then our weaknesses become evident and hinder us.  When we are weak and takes our eyes off Christ, we become like Peter and begin to sink.  But what do we do when we begin to sink?  Do we run back to Him or continue down the rebellious path of “Our Own Way”?  Others may not embrace our faith.  They may not even believe in Jesus.   They may follow a pagan god or even secular gods like power or success or popularity or possessions or status or position or wealth or ….

But the truth is, if we live a life of integrity and practice wise living and wise choices, our conduct will be respected and our advice will be sought because others will see the difference Christ makes in our lives and recognize that difference as good.   Peter said: “Always be ready to give an answer to everyone who asks you for a reason regarding the hope that is in you, yet answer with gentleness and reverence” I PETER 3:15

When we let God put us on a path of obedience and fellowship with Him, we soon discovered it is not an easy or a path free of problems and struggles but always a path to eternal life and a right and better path.   When we deviate from that path, we     will discover regrets and disappointments because satan always promised much and delivers only misery and death with his lies. Evil can’t be recognized without having a basis of judging evil as wrong with a gage of what is good.  Christ is our perfect gage of good and scripture is our instruction of what is Good and how to become more like Him and be in fellowship with Him.  God is accessible and is the gage we can judge good as well as evil by.  Any other gage is short of Absolute Good and accepting any other gage for good is accepting a less than perfect example which has at least some evil behavior.  By accepting an imperfect gage for good, we accept the evil that gage or example did as good.  That is exactly why we should not settle for anything less than Christ’s example and Christ’s as the gage and standard for Good.

God’s Word is given so we might always know the truth about God, Satan, ourselves, and life. Use God’s Word to put flight to temptations when they arise.

“Our response to temptation is an accurate barometer of our love for God“  Erwin W. Lutzer
