Out of the Heart

matthew15-25

For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies.   Matthew 15:19

RECOMMENDED READING: Matthew 14:1-12  “At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus,And said unto his servants, This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead; and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him.For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for Herodias’ sake, his brother Philip’s wife. For John said unto him, It is not lawful for thee to have her.And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet. But when Herod’s birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod.Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever she would askAnd she, being before instructed of her mother, said, Give me here John Baptist’s head in a charger. And the king was sorry: nevertheless for the oath’s sake, and them which sat with him at meat, he commanded it to be given her.10 And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison.11 And his head was brought in a charger, and given to the damsel: and she brought it to her mother.12 And his disciples came, and took up the body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus.”

COMMENTS: Why is a democracy a better form of government over a dictatorship?  After all, God rules heaven and will rule earth Himself.  Well, maybe not completely because Jesus did say we will rule with Him when He sets up His rule on earth.  Truth is a dictatorship works better with a wise benevolent ruler than with an arrogant selfish power-hungry ruler.  Evil inspired rulers like Nero or Hitler have done devastation to their subjects and countries and beyond. Even good rulers like Solomon went astray and were corrupted by the power they had.

Truth is each and every human, no matter how wise or smart or discerning they are, are flawed and influenced by satan’s deceptions.  When they think they can do well without constant input and council of the Holy Spirit, it is then they are at great risk of satan’s influence.  Even good intentions can bring disaster without God’s wisdom and direction.

An example is Mao Zedong decided sparrows were pest and ordered them destroyed.  He didn’t realize they were predators to locusts.  With the sparrows gone, the locust multiplied and devastated the Chinese agriculture, causing famine and starvation.  30 million Chinese people died due to Mao’s mistake!   Mao leaded on his own defective thinking instead of God’s wisdom.  Why would a democracy be any better?  Well, potentially not, but wisdom of a group of people would at least give the potential of those with more wisdom and greater insight to provide input closer to or including God’s wisdom.

Herod’s decision to steal his brother Philip’s wife, Herodias, set a chain of sinful events in motion and compelled Herod to kill John the Baptist instead of letting John’s preaching lead him to Christ.  Herod was becoming open to John’s message but a foolish choice changed his future and a multitude of others.   God’s work was not hindered for He knew what Herod would do and worked even his evil choices into His plan.  But if Herod would have chosen more wisely, he and many others affected would have had a much brighter future and Christ still would have fulfilled His mission.

Adolf Hitler grew up in a Christian family but his family failed him and he failed his family and nation.  He chose to follow a satan inspired path instead of embracing the Savior who died and rose to offer him redemption.

With great power and ability comes great responsibility due to potential to do great good or great harm.  We are accountable for what we do or say or don’t do or say.  Hiding our gifts is just as great a sin as misusing our gifts.  Both have the potential of harming not only ourselves but others God wants us to positively impact.

Scripture tells us: “To be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace” (Romans 8:6). The only hope we have for our actions and words to do good and not harm is to be and stay in constant fellowship with Christ through the Holy Spirit’s abiding presence in our lives.  We accomplish that by keeping open to and seeking His council and refraining from acting until He sense His direction.  Maybe we don’t need His help to pick the cloths we will wear each day or other simple unimpactful choices we make each day, but then again, how can we judge how God can and will use even simple choices to do His Will?  Why not make it a discipline and practice to keep Him in all we do instead of trying to figure out when to rely on ourselves and when not too.  We can’t bore Him.  He won’t grow weary or tired of us if we go to Him too often.  His passion is to be in fellowship with us.  AMEN!!

“Every day in which I do not penetrate more deeply into the knowledge of God’s Word in Holy Scripture is a lost day for me.”  Dietrich Bonhoeffer
