Field Time with God

Genesis 24,63

Isaac went out to meditate in the field in the evening.  Genesis 24:63

Recommended Reading: Genesis 24:62-6762 Now Isaac came from the way of Beer Lahai Roi, for he dwelt in the South. 63 And Isaac went out to meditate in the field in the evening; and he lifted his eyes and looked, and there, the camels were coming. 64 Then Rebekah lifted her eyes, and when she saw Isaac she dismounted from her camel; 65 for she had said to the servant, “Who is this man walking in the field to meet us?”The servant said, “It is my master.” So she took a veil and covered herself.66 And the servant told Isaac all the things that he had done. 67 Then Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah’s tent; and he took Rebekah and she became his wife, and he loved her. So Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.”

COMMENTS:   Summer is quickly passing and Fall will be here before we know it.  I live in Northern Pennsylvania so enjoy experiencing all 4 seasons each year.  During late summer field corn blankets farmer’s fields mostly, but other vegetables and hay fields also blanket open fields everywhere. Before long, crops will be harvested and those fields will once again appear as barren land.  Then comes winter with crisp white snow blanketing those fields.   Taking the time to meditate and fellowship privately with God, especially while reflecting on the beauty and vastness of His creation, helps recharge our relationship with Him and helps give us direction for our days.  Do you have a favorite place to pray and study His word?  I am writing this journal entry as the sun rises and shines through our living room window.  I love to get up early and pray and reflect on His Word while watching the sun rise.  Watching as the darkness of night gives way to a sunny morning.  Even the clouds can not stop the sun from lighting the sky.  The sun’s power is too powerful to be stopped from lighting the world.  I am also reminded as dark as the world is and as strong as satan’s influence is, God’s power and Will shall prevail and His Light will be evident when He returns.  Every morning the sun rises and reminds us that God is still on His throne and will prevail.  Likewise, God gives us a fresh new day each morning with an opportunity to do over mistakes of previous day as well as a fresh opportunity to make changes in direction or continue to completion tasks and goals from previous day(s). Every morning is a fresh and new beginning and every night brings rest and opportunity to thank God for His help and providing rest from our labors.

Genesis 24 shares Isaac’s experiences of fellowship and worship of God in open fields local to him. Nature was noticed and appreciated by him and can believe dawn and sunset were favorite times for him to focus on worship and fellowship with God.  Recharging our spiritual battery is vital to our relationship with God and health and wisdom in life.  God has a wonderful way of revealing His Will and providing help and strength at places of worship.  Taking the time to spend some time with Him gives us opportunity to discover and follow God’s wisdom and direction instead of following a foolish or less wise path.  Taking time at the beginning of our day is like a lumberjack sharpening his axe before starting his day’s work.  Praying and worship at end of day is like a full night’s rest.  Both are essential to efficiently working and being prepared and able to work.  Rest strengthens and heals the body while prayer and devotions enable us to receive and follow God’s Will but also allows us to communicate and share our concerns and thoughts, which opens the door for us to see and partner in God’s influence and miracles, but also for us to influence how and when God’s Will is accomplished.  This is a mystery but our prayers do make a difference on how and when God’s Will is done.  Consider examples from scripture as well as examples of Christians you know and even examples from your past.

“[Isaac] went out to take the advantage of a silent evening, and a solitary place, for meditation and prayer; those divine exercises by which we converse with God and our own hearts.”
Matthew Henry
