The Certainty of God

Matthew+25 24-30

He who observes the wind will not sow, and he who regards the clouds will not reap.
Ecclesiastes 11:4

Recommended Reading: Matthew 25:24-3024 “Then he who had received the one talent came and said, ‘Lord, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you have not sown, and gathering where you have not scattered seed. 25 And I was afraid, and went and hid your talent in the ground. Look, there you have what is yours.’26 “But his lord answered and said to him, ‘You wicked and lazy servant, you knew that I reap where I have not sown, and gather where I have not scattered seed. 27 So you ought to have deposited my money with the bankers, and at my coming I would have received back my own with interest. 28 Therefore take the talent from him, and give it to him who has ten talents.29 ‘For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away. 30 And cast the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

COMMENTS:  Weather forecasters, Meteorologists, have a lot of technology to help them accurately forecast weather, but often they are wrong.  Weather patterns change unpredictably at times.  But when they are wrong, they make correction and move on.

However, those who depend on them to give accurate weather forecasts often have a lot at stake to get accurate weather forecasts.  Farmers use these forecasts to decide when to plant and harvest or protect plants from frost or flooding or winds or other severe weather conditions.  An inaccurate forecast could cost him his source of income.  Others who work outside also plan work around weather forecasts and depend on accurate forecasts for their livelihood too.

In ancient times or even as recent as 50 years ago, farmers depended on early signs in the sky or publications like the Farmer’s Alamac in our grandparent’s generation to help them prepare for storms.

Life was uncertain and disaster often came, but family and neighbors would work together to rebuild or repair damaged buildings and replant crops.  Today neighbors also work together after disasters like tornadoes and floods and fires too.

God intends for us to build relationships with each other and work together during good and bad times.  We can’t be certain God will keep disaster and misery from finding us.  Satan loves to reign misery on us and God loves to shower blessing on us.  However, God also knows all blessing without some hardship is too great a temptation for us to no longer rely on Him and rely only on ourselves.  Trials teach us to rely on God and seek help from our neighbors, thereby encouraging us to be in close relationship with both neighbor and with Christ.  Depending on the Holy Spirit to guide and strengthen us is needed in both good times and bad, but we encounter greater motivation to seek His help during bad times because we fear the danger and realize we need help and can’t solve the problems we are facing alone.

It is amazing to me we learn to work together at our employment more naturally than we do in our personal lives.  Fighting and arguing is not acceptable at our employment.  Our boss requires us to work together and help each other.  Anything less creates problems and hinders meeting goals.  So why don’t we discipline ourselves at home and at church as well?   Maybe it is, we can force ourselves to be on our best behavior when we have to and for a limited time but when get home we can “let our hair down”.  Likewise, family often likes to “push our buttons” even though no good comes from irritating and causing conflict.

But Christ still has a better way and the Holy Spirit wants to abide in us to help us “be on our good behavior” permanently by cleaning our hearts and giving us victory over bad habits and thoughts and weaknesses we are tempted by.

We are human and will not be perfect while on earth, but we can and need to grow significantly and are capable of being a lot more Christ-like than we currently are.  So, let’s not just accept we are like we are and seek His help to change.  We need to love those who irritate us and let the Holy Spirit do a work in them too.

Consider what God wants to change in us.  We can support and work toward that goal.  It is harder to deal with others since they are responsible for their own actions.  God also gives them free will.  But consider changes in us can and does impact change in others and may indeed be the key in driving needed change in those we love and care about faster than anything else we could do in addition to prayer as well. AMEN?  AMEN!
