We Can’t Hide from God

II CORINTHIANS 1

Rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels.
2 Thessalonians 1:7

SCRIPTURE: 2 THESSALONIANS 1:3-10  “We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is fitting, because your faith grows exceedingly, and the love of every one of you all abounds toward each other, so that we ourselves boast of you among the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that you endure, which is manifest evidence of the righteous judgment of God, that you may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you also suffer; since it is a righteous thing with God to repay with tribulation those who trouble you, and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power, 10 when He comes, in that Day, to be glorified in His saints and to be admired among all those who believe, because our testimony among you was believed.”

COMMENTS:  Do you remember playing hide and seek as a child with your friends or with a parent or grandparent?  Maybe you, as a parent or grandparent have played this game with children under your care. In many parts of the world Christians are in hiding from government soldiers or police in countries that prohibit Christ worship or evangelism.  But the majority of the world’s people ignore or are trying to hide from God.  Consider just how foolish that is.

This morning I was listening to David Jeremiah.  He shared an illustration of a group of broken followers worshipping to a Buddha for help while workers on a scaffold were repairing damage to the back of that statue of Buddha.   They were seeking help from a broken Buddha, that was not capable of helping anyone, including himself.  The gods we humans create are flawed and decay just like we do.

In contrast, God has attributes and abilities no one can comprehend let alone describe sufficiently.  How could we because, unlike other gods, God created us instead of humans creating their god.   Why has man created gods anyway?  Well, as we look at history recorded in scripture and from other sources, we discover man creates gods in order to condone their own sinful behavior.  Satan is the source and instigator of pagan god worship.   Worshipping false gods satisfies satan’s goal by denying God’s existence and His standards of behavior.

Well, hiding or ignoring or denying God and His existence is the ultimate folly.  To deny God’s existence is arrogant folly.  The evidence of God’s existence and involvement in the world is overwhelming and all around us. God exists and will have His way whether we like it or not.  Whether we follow Him or not.  Whether we ignore Him or worship Him.  The consequences of not following Him is on us and those who rebel with us.

Since we can’t hide from God, what should we do?  Consider what David did when Nathan confronted him with his sin of adultery with Bathsheba and for murdering her husband, Uriah.  Instead of hiding like Adam and Eve or hardening his hard like Saul, David ran to God and bowed in repentance at His altar in the temple.  David begged for mercy when he realized his sin.  For the king to humble himself instead of denying his sin was a difficult and potentially a dangerous thing for a king to do.  He was in the public eye and remaining popular and have the respect of his subjects was important to him.  Admitting sin and seeking God’s forgiveness is not what a king normally does.  BUT THAT WAS EXACTLY WHAT A KING SHOULD DO AND WAS WHAT DAVID DID.  The result was God’s forgiveness and healing for David.  David continued as king instead of forfeiting his throne as Saul had to do.

The wonderful news is WE CAN’T HIDE FROM GOD AND HE SEEKS US OUT NOT TO KILL US BUT TO OFFER US FORGIVENESS AND ETERNAL LIFE.  Be glad we can’ t hide from Him.  That also means He is an abiding presence to forgive and help and strengthen us all the time and everywhere we go.   We can depend on Him for He will always be faithful to us.  Don’t try to hide or ignore Him.  Instead, run to Him and embrace Him, for He cares for you and more than able to take care of you both now and forever. AMEN!
