Unlikely Likeable – Young David

1 timothy 4,12

Recommended Reading: I TIMOTHY 4:12 “12 Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.”

COMMENTS:  Yesterday we looked at the differences between physical attributes we tend to admire and the attributes God values and admires.  We may admire and envy youth but tend to lack confidence and trust in leadership and ministry and joy skill abilities due to lack of experience.  We tend to admire and seek out advice from “grey haired” seniors more than from teens or young adults for this reason.  Well, truth is experience is a good teacher and value of seeking council from seniors is both encouraged by scripture and by life experience. But not all senior are wise nor have gained wisdom from a long relationship with God nor have learned wisdom from life experiences.  Truth is satan is just as good at deceiving and tempting seniors as with youth.  The nature of temptations may change but news reveals many of the same temptations of youth still can and do vex many seniors.

So, what does God see that we need to and who should we seek council from?  God saw something special in Timothy as a youth.  Timothy had learned wisdom for a mother and grandmother who were devout followers of Christ.  He too accepted Christ and was following the Holy Spirit’s council.  He didn’t have the life experiences of his grandmother but had her council and the Holy Spirit’s council and the council of many other faithful followers.  All this set him apart to be worthy of a greater level of responsibility and opportunity than most youth of his age were capable of.   Paul saw this and encouraged him to stretch his faith in obedience but not to be discouraged when others humiliated or disappointed him because of his youth and inexperience.

Do you know any youth who stand out?  I do and know a few young and middle age couples that stand out as well.  God honors those who follow Him, but it is our job and focus to honor Him above all else.  Such can and should be the norm in every generation.  That is God’s goal and passion but requires each one of us to choose to follow His plan and hand to happen.  If it only happens rarely instead of with everyone, it is because most aren’t open to accept and follow Him.  It is not due to lack of desire or opportunity given by Him.

“He that was our Help from our birth, ought to be our Hope from our youth. “Matthew Henry
