What Would it be Like?

God is love.  1 John 4:8

Recommended Reading: I John 4:7-11Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.”

COMMENTS:   Scripture teaches love is a choice before it is a genuine feeling.  We can’t trust our feelings especially when it comes to loving relationships.   If we depend on feelings to dictate who we will be in relationship with, we will most likely be disappointed.  Our feelings will betray us most of the time, but that doesn’t mean our emotions and feelings are always evil.  We simply can’t trust them nor make choices only based on feelings.  But then again, wise choices can and do influence and bring discipline to our feelings.  Well, the first and most important choice to love is to love our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  He is the only worthy choice to worship and obey but also the first and only worth choice to give our love to.  So, love is a choice.  A choice to be vulnerable and to be in close relationship with.  A choice to trust and share personal thoughts and dreams with.

When we focus on loving Christ first, then loving each other and family and spouse become more natural and easier.  When we love Christ first and allow our love for others to be filtered through our love for Him, we discover a much higher and purer capacity to love others and also find ourselves becoming more loveable too.

I see that change in my own life and in the lives of my wife and children and many in our church and community.   But, of course, I still see that love falling short of being “Christ like”, especially in me.   That is because they and I are still influences by satan’s temptations and human weaknesses.  That will be true all our lives, but that doesn’t mean we still can improve a great deal more while still alive.  The process of improving is achieved by being in daily relationship with Christ through the Holy Spirit.  We tend to settle for much less or become blinded to our own faults and shortcomings, so need to seek and trust the Holy Spirit’s council and appraisal and instruction instead of our own perspective.    Pride is the worst obstacle to living a Christ-like life and loving as He loves.  But then again, pride starts as a feeling that influences our thoughts so we can’t trust it either.  When we look at the lives of those destroyed by pride in scripture, the list is long.  How many wars and broken families and tragic deaths and scared lives are a result of pride?   I dare say all of them.  But then again, Lucifer became satan due to pride and has been responsible for brings pride and all temptations to sin due to pride in his own heart and vulnerability to pride in the hearts of humans from and in every generation since Adam.  So, pride is the source or root of all sin and still is.  Denying or ignoring sin or sinful pride doesn’t make it go away, but only makes it more powerful and dangerous.

So, we are no match to satan’s prideful temptations.  Our minds and our emotions are no match, but THE HOLY SPIRIT IS MORE THAN STRONG ENOUGH AND IS AVAILABLE TO ALL.

Pride and love are incompatible, or at least love as Christ defines and displays.  That is love as we were designed to experience and share. Love that creates and brings life and not death or destruction.  Love that forgives instead of judges or condemns.  Love that encourages and works to improve the lives of those we love instead of giving them things and resources that brings harm to them.

“It would not take twenty-four hours to make the world come to God, if you can only make them believe God is love. If you can really make a man believe you love him, you have won him; and if I could only make people really believe that God loves them, what a rush we would see for the kingdom of God!”       D.L.Moody

“If I thought I could only make the world believe that God is love, I would only take that text and go up and down the earth, trying to counteract what Satan has been telling them.”  D. L. Moody
