Permanent High Priest

john+16-33

[Christ] does not need daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the people’s, for this He did once for all when He offered up Himself.

Hebrews 7:27

Recommended Reading: JOHN 16:5-7  “But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou? But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart.Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.”

COMMENTS:  Christ’s sacrifice and work was so complete and powerful and eternal that it is easy to take His work for granted.  We tend to take predictable events every day like the sunrise and gravity and time and air and warmth and light and …. The list goes on.  But the incredible miracle each gift is and how desperately we all depend on each is overwhelming when reflect on magnitude of each gift.  The balance of life and position of earth in relation to other planets and to the sun is critical to sustain life as we know it.

We tend to discount or neglect noticing God’s miracles that are common and experienced often.  We also tend to take special people in our lives too, don’t we?   But common miracles should not make them any less a miracle any more than having special people in our lives faithfully blessing us being any less a miracle of God to us either.  Would it be better if a spouse or child spent one day a year with you than every day?  Of course not.  So why do we treat them as though it was?  Same on us and those who  tend to take them for granted.   Same is true of God and His faithfulness in providing His miracles for us each and every day.

But the greatest miracle of all is Christ’s miracle of salvation and eternal life He paid dearly for.  Then there is the abiding presence of the Holy Spirit to help and comfort and empower us continually to sustain a real relationship with Him.  We can’t understand the concept of God as a Triune God but that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy a relationship with Him and enjoy His choice to reveal Himself to us as the Father and as the Son and as the Holy Spirit.  By recognizing and having fellowship with the Holy Spirit, we open ourselves to accessing God in a personal way and enjoy the constant benefits of having such a relationship with His Holy Spirit.  We also need to realize that by having relationship with the Holy Spirit, we are connecting with Christ and the Father as well.  As a man, I find it difficult to communicate with more than one person at a time.  Women tend to be more capable and skillful at carrying on conversation with more than one person at a time in a group.  As a man, I  tend to shut out one conversation so can concentrate on one at a time.  God is not limited in such a way so He can communicate personally on all who seek Him at the same time.   His Holy Spirit is His way of helping us communicate effectively with Him and was provided after Christ returned to heaven, as the above scripture reveals.

Christ became our High Priest and advocate with the Father as well as our sacrifice to justify us to the Father.  That means we can boldly approach His Throne without condemnation.  We are unworthy but Christ makes us worthy.

Our God is too wonderful to take for granted.  We miss out of too much when we do.   There is so much more we can discover of Him when we open ourselves to discover more blessing from Him when we do.  That is a lifetime journey of discovery, as Christ followers, you and I are journeying with His Holy Spirit.

As the permanent High Priest, Jesus is an Advocate in heaven for all who He represents (1 John 2:1), always there to make intercession for us (Romans 8:34; Hebrews 7:25). No earthly priest could, or can, do that for us.                                              When you pray today, imagine Jesus as your Advocate, interceding for you before the Father.

Jesus Christ carries on intercession for us in heaven; the Holy Ghost carries on intercession in us on earth.”  Oswald Chambers
