Living Word

Hebrews+416

For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Hebrews 4:12

RECOMMENDED READING: PSALM 107:15-30  “15 Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!16 For he hath broken the gates of brass, and cut the bars of iron in sunder.17 Fools because of their transgression, and because of their iniquities, are afflicted.18 Their soul abhorreth all manner of meat; and they draw near unto the gates of death.19 Then they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, and he saveth them out of their distresses.20 He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.21 Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!22 And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and declare his works with rejoicing.23 They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters;24 These see the works of the Lord, and his wonders in the deep.25 For he commandeth, and raiseth the stormy wind, which lifteth up the waves thereof.26 They mount up to the heaven, they go down again to the depths: their soul is melted because of trouble.27 They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wit’s end.28 Then they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, and he bringeth them out of their distresses.29 He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still.30 Then are they glad because they be quiet; so he bringeth them unto their desired haven.”

COMMENTS: Have you ever taken someone very important to you for granted?   Maybe a parent or spouse or a grandmother or even a child.   Someone who serves or provides for you faithfully.   How would you be impacted if they stopped or were no longer near.    Well, reflect on how much we depend on Christ.  How much we depend on His Holy Spirit and mercy each and every day without fail.   We don’t worry about the sun coming up or if we will live another day or if gravity will hold us on earth while we sleep.  We don’t worry if we will wake up the next morning.

But many in the world live with uncertainty if ruling dictator will order military to imprison or murder them or their family for simply sharing Christ’s message.  Some live with risk of severe weather like tornados or hurricanes common during summer months or severe blizzards and snow slides and bitter cold in winter time.  Consider what the world would have been like if Hitler had won WWII.  His vision of exterminating all Jews everywhere was his passion and obsession.  But recall God’s promise to Abraham including promise to bless those who bless him and his dependents and curse those who curse him and his descendants.  Consider the countless other evil men who terrorized conquered countries reigning death and separation of children from parents.

Few sane people want to live in the world Hitler tried to create and rule.  Few reasonable people would choose the world satan is working hard to create either.  Instead satan masks his destructive goals and methods with lies of short term pleasures and gain.  You and I can easily come up with a long list of examples of those who yielded to satan’s temptations and lived to regret those choices and are suffering the consequences.  Even you and I have endured some consequences of our sinful or foolish choices.  God’s grace provides redemption and a fresh start and a way back into His will and from those consequence.

Life without Christ is unbearable.  Life with Christ is wonderful.  We have no hope without Christ, but with Christ we have nothing to fear.  So, we need to stop taking Him for granted and start praising Him each new morning and each evening and often in between.  Doing so increases our faith and trust in Him.  Doing so draws us closer to Him and makes Him more real to us and more involved in our lives.  Doing so also empowers us with joy and energizes our day.  Doing so enables us to love Him more deeply and others too.

Scripture, our Bible, is God’s precious gift to us, His love letter to us, His living Word available to each of us.  Consider all the tremendous resources He has made available to us to aid us.  His living Word, His abiding Holy Spirit, Christ’s redemptive sacrifice, encouraging Christian friends and family and church to make us accountable for our actions and words.

Roads are designed and built to provide a safe and reliable path to travel to intended destinations.  Roads may not provide the shortest distance but surest route to those destinations.  Along those roads are signs to help us avoid making wrong turns resulting in lost time and loosing our way too.  God’s Word is a wonderful road map too in guiding us through life safely to Christ’s waiting arms eager to greet us and welcome us to the eternal home He is preparing for us.
