The Lost Love Letter

psalm+119-33-40

I long for Your precepts; revive me in Your righteousness. Psalm 119:40

Recommended Reading: PSALM 119:33-40   “33 Teach me, O Lord, the way of thy statutes; and I shall keep it unto the end.34 Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law; yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart.35 Make me to go in the path of thy commandments; for therein do I delight.36 Incline my heart unto thy testimonies, and not to covetousness.37 Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity; and quicken thou me in thy way.38 Stablish thy word unto thy servant, who is devoted to thy fear.39 Turn away my reproach which I fear: for thy judgments are good.40 Behold, I have longed after thy precepts: quicken me in thy righteousness.”

COMMENTS:

I am privileged and blessed to have a mother and father who showed me by example and by character both how to be a good parent and follower of Christ.   Their love for each other and for us was truly amazing.   They lived to see their 66th wedding anniversary.  They are both in heaven but faced the end of their lives with confident peace knowing their future in heaven was secure and Christ was waiting for them.  A few months ago, we discovered an old shoe box that had love letters from my dad to my mother during the early years of their marriage when my father was away helping on his grandfather’s farm during the summers.  They were able to preserve that longing to be together all their lives.  They never spoke ill of each other even when they disagreed.  Arlene and I just celebrated our 40th anniversary and have strove to follow their example too.  Arlene’s parents provide us with the same example as well.  Their legacy is continuing through us to our children and other family who were impacted by their lives.

Our Bible is God’s love letter to us, showing us God’s heart and character and love for each of us. He does this by not just giving us a book of knowledge and history.  Not just a book of wisdom and instruction.  Not even just a book of instruction of how to be forgiven and get to heaven.  Not even just of book telling us of future events.  It is a book through which the Holy Spirit reveals God’s abiding presence as we read and pray.   The Bible is a living Book because the Holy Spirit dwells in each word of scripture and also in the hearts of all who read it with an open and receptive mind and heart.  Once we accept Christ’s gift of forgiveness, the Holy Spirit is available to live in and guide us 24x7x365.  But even before, the Holy Spirit is providing opportunities to repent and turn from sin to His Grace.  The Bible is full of countless examples of those who suffered greatly by refusing and examples of those who enjoyed God’s blessings when turn back to Him with repentant hearts.

Charles Stanley wrote, “The Bible is God’s love letter to mankind. You may never have thought of it that way; many people tend to think of the Bible as a rule book or a story book. In reality the Bible is a magnificent love letter in which God tells His children how He longs to care for them and bless them, forgive them and shower them with His mercy.”1

“The Bible is God’s “love letter” to us, telling us not only that He loves us, but showing us what He has done to demonstrate His love.”   Billy Graham
