A Reason to Worship

psalm 17,5

And Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God. Then all the people answered, “Amen, Amen!” while lifting up their hands. And they bowed their heads and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground. Nehemiah 8:6

RECOMMENDED READING: PSALM 119:1-12  “Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the Lord.Blessed are they that keep his testimonies, and that seek him with the whole heart. They also do no iniquity: they walk in his ways.Thou hast commanded us to keep thy precepts diligently.O that my ways were directed to keep thy statutes! Then shall I not be ashamed, when I have respect unto all thy commandments.I will praise thee with uprightness of heart, when I shall have learned thy righteous judgments.I will keep thy statutes: O forsake me not utterly.Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word.10 With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments.11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.12 Blessed art thou, O Lord: teach me thy statutes..”

COMMENTS: Stop and reflect on some special letters you’ve received.  Can you remember the birthday or Christmas cards or special love letters you received when you were dating your spouses?  I can and can remember savoring every word and reading them over and over again.  I still do but the excitement and amazement has settled just a little bit.  Then I could hardly believe someone could love me.  I have to admit I still wonder about that but after 40 years of marriage, Arlene has convinced me she does and always will and I see evidence I have convinced her of the same.  But when love was new and young, that realization was almost overwhelming and unbelievable.  Couples should never lose that sense of amazement and excitement.

But our relationship with Christ should be filled with amazement and excitement too.  When we read His love letter to us, His Holy Bible, we should read it with excitement and joy.  With a sense of awe savoring each word and pondering each word in our hearts.  We should long for time with Him and enjoy our time of prayer and fellowship with Him.  When we let that sense of amazement and awe fade, we let the joy evaporate from our worship and Christian walk too.  We allow ourselves to be exposed to satan’s snares steadily drawing us away from life giving fellowship with Him.  We also allow ourselves to become numb and deaf to His Holy Spirit’s voice and nudging in our lives each day.

Truth is, human nature is to become accustomed to blessings and to special people in our lives.  We also tend to become used to God too.  That has been the history of Israel in the old testament too.  They would get used to God’s blessings and start taking Him for granted and then become lazy in worship and then start wondering away from God and wondering to false gods and deadly sin.   Then terrible things would begin falling on them because God’s protection was removed and finally God’s judgment would fall on them and they would endure judgment for a time until they would repent and return back to God and into God’s protection and blessing once more.  That cycle was repeated many times.

How many times has this cycle been repeated in your life and mine?  I dare say more times than we can count or remember.  We may think we haven’t done so or at least to the degree of Israelites.  But then again if we look at our lives from God’s perspective and our obedience from God’s standard, we would have to admit we continue to fall short of Christ’s example of obedience and faithfulness to His Father’s will.

Christ is calling us back to our first love.  His Holy Spirit is nudging us to a closer relationship with Christ too.  Let’s pray He soften our hearts and return us to those early years when our love for Him was stronger and when we read His Word as His love letter to us.  His love for you and me has not faded and He desires and intends our love for Him to grow stronger and deeper, not diminish as it will do without hard word and conviction on our part.

I am certain we will worship and love Him with great passion and love in heaven, so why not get warmed up while here.  It might just make our time on earth a bit more like heaven and us a bit easier to live with and a better example others might just want to example too.  AMEN?  AMEN!

“Let the Good News of God’s Word move you to worship each time you read God’s “great and precious promises”” (2 Peter 1:4).   When we see even a small glimpse of God’s holiness, we will bow in worship.    R. C. Sproul
