A Few Names

Col 3,12

You have a few names even in Sardis who have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with Me in white, for they are worthy.                      Revelation 3:4

RECOMMENDED  READING: I KINGS 19:13-18  “And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah?14 And he said, I have been very jealous for the Lord God of hosts: because the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.15 And the Lord said unto him, Go, return on thy way to the wilderness of Damascus: and when thou comest, anoint Hazael to be king over Syria:16 And Jehu the son of Nimshi shalt thou anoint to be king over Israel: and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abelmeholah shalt thou anoint to be prophet in thy room.17 And it shall come to pass, that him that escapeth the sword of Hazael shall Jehu slay: and him that escapeth from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha slay.18 Yet I have left me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him.”

COMMENTS:  John gave a candid appraisal of the 7 churches of Asia Minor in Revelation 2-3 and was “tough medicine” mostly, but God revealed to John the condition of each of the 7 churches with great love and compassion and also with great concern. Concern because many of the churches were deathly sick and even dying.  Their congregations had many members either dying or spreading death among weak members.  Sardis was the church needing the strongest medicine because Christ revealed the worst diagnosis to John.   Sardis was dead.  No, there was a lot of activity and even “good deeds” but something was missing.  Missing was spiritual life – a daily relationship with Christ.

I am reminded of David and the close relationship with God that sustained and guided him through many years of danger when he was pursued by King Saul.   Yet, when he sinned with Bathsheba and killed her husband, he didn’t even notice he had walked away from God and wasn’t even missing that relationship until Nathan confronted him.  How many of us allow sin into our lives and walk away from God and don’t notice the loss either?  But others notice because of a change in us.  That is why we need to be accountable to each other so the medicine of healing can be taken before the disease of sin overtakes us.   Redemption is always available and Christ so wants to not only save us from sin and death but walk with us each and every day so we are satan’s death does not sneak back into our lives.

You and I are not strong or smart or experienced enough to fight satan on our own.  He has more power and a lot more experience than us but also determination to hurt God and the only way he can, which is to hurt us.  We need to see and understand that, because the only way we can stop him is to draw closer to Christ, who so loves us and paid so much for our redemption.  We need to let God’s abiding Holy Spirit in our lives so we can live and sustain a more Christ-like life.

That is our calling and our obligation but our greatest opportunity and also our greatest joy.  Why?  Because of His great love for us and loving Him is our greatest need!!  Have you ever seen a couple deeply in love with each other?  How does that affect how they treat other people?  When love is young, that is true.  We need to go back to our first and greatest love.  Our love for our Savior!  If we are sincere in our desire to become Christ-like, then we have no other option than to choose to love.  To love as He loves.  That is the only way to be Christ-like.  It is the only to sustain a love for Him as well.  Otherwise, we will slowly move away from Him and slowly  die.  We will become like Sardis without even realizing it.
