Sanctified Stubbornness

Gal 5,1

“Nevertheless I have a few things against you.”  Revelation 2:20

During the Reformation, Martin Luther was pressured to compromise key points involving the doctrine of justification by grace through faith. Critics said he should be more flexible with his beliefs for the sake of unity

RECOMMENDED READING: GALATIANS 1:8-10  “But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, if any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.10 For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.”

COMMENTS: Martin Luther faced almost constant death threats not from radicals but from leaders in his own church and country.  Why?  Because he preached Christ’s gospel and provided God’s Word to common people so they could read for themselves God’s Word.  Martin preached the doctrine of justification by Grace through faith, a doctrine Christian Churches accept universally.  But still most people still believe it is possible to earn their salvation in spite of this.  They still want to believe the good they do will get them into heaven.  But this thinking prevents accepting the wonderful news they don’t need to.  They only need to repent and seek and receive Christ’s forgiving Grace.  But it is repentance most have a problem with.  If they can wash out sin by doing good, then they don’t have to give up sin, just pay for it with a few good deeds like taking some medicine for an illness so can keep on doing what they want.  But this is a lie from satan designed to keep us from God’s grace and keep us lost in our sins.  BUT EASTER SHOUTS CHRIST’S GOOD NEWS AND SPRING SHOUTS CHRIST IS RISEN AND HIS GOOD NEWS IS FOR EVERYONE WHO WILL RECEIVE IT!

Martin Luther’s response to demands to recant his position and preaching and teaching of Christ’s justification was “Our stubbornness on this issue is pious and holy; for by it we are striving to preserve the freedom we have in Christ Jesus and to keep the truth of the Gospel. If we lose this, we lose God, Christ, all the promises, faith, righteousness, and eternal life.”  Luther eluded those who would silence him and died an old man true to his calling and true to his message of justification through faith alone.  His good deeds didn’t get him into heaven but his faith and acceptance of Christ’s redemption did.  His good works did gain him a reward, but I believe the most precious reward he received was the joy of seeking countless lost souls saved from hearing and reading the message he shared during his lifetime.  That can and will be our reward too if we are faithful to accept and share Christ’s Good News too.  How and where we do will vary in place and frequency, but God will give us opportunity if we obey.  No better time than lent to get started…

“Our stubbornness on this issue is pious and holy; for by it we are striving to preserve the freedom we have in Christ!”

The issue before us is grave and vital; it involves the death of the Son of God, who, by the will and command of the Father, became flesh, was crucified, and died for the sins of the world.”  Martin Luther
