When Opposition Comes

When Opposition Comes

Contradicting and blaspheming, they opposed the things spoken by Paul. Acts 13:45

RECOMMENDED READING LUKE 12:4-7   “And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do.But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God?But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows.”

COMMENTS: How can help but be fearful in the midst of real dangers and crisis?  The above scripture tells us not to fear risk of death but fear God.

Corrie Ten Boom defined anxiety, Worry, as “a cycle of inefficient thoughts whirling around a center of fear”.

John Newton, author of “Amazing Grace”, redeemed slave trader, and pastor, identified “faith” as the cure for fear.  He wrote, “If the Lord be with us, we have no cause to fear.  His eye is upon us, His arm over us, His ear open to our prayer – His grace is sufficient, His promise unchangeable.”

As Christ followers, He has not promised us ease or comfort or a life free of stress or tragedy or danger.   He gives us plenty of example from lives of those before us.  But He has promised to guide and even carry us safely to our eternal Home.  He has promised to provide help and strength and guidance, but most of all to walk the journey with us.  Dark times are intended by satan to destroy us and frustrate God.  But God intends and uses them to draw us closer to Him so He can make us more like Himself.

Tragedy or sickness is not all.  Persecution of Christians has been evident in every generation since and including the early church.  Persecution was severe then but is much worse in many countries and overall more Christians are martyred today than any other time in history.  In the midst of persecution, Christians have overcome fear and desperation with peace and confident faith, resulted in incredible courage and praise.  The first was Stephen but his courage from God’s abiding Holy Spirit gave others courage as they faced the same fate.  His abiding Holy Spirit continues to do so no matter if suffering or death comes prematurely from persecution or illness or after a long life from natural causes.  He not only gives us courage to face death, but courage to live life faithful to Him too.    He who has helped me hitherto, / Will help me all my journey through.  John Newton
