How Do We Give?

i corintians 13

But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.        Romans 5:8

Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s poem “How Do I Love Thee?” (Sonnet 43) is a well-known love poem. She begins, “How do I love thee? Let me count the ways,” and proceeds to list more than half a dozen ways. We understand the poet’s desire to meditate on the many reasons and ways of love. But it raises the question, “Can love be counted?” Quantifying love runs the risk of taking the focus off its beauty.

COMMENTS: The impact of a totally surrendered life is powerful and world changing. Billy Graham led such a life.  His commitment to follow his calling to preach Christ’s redemptive Gospel to everyone in all countries drove him to go to countries with governments hostile to Christians and even to it’s people.  He did so without taking sides but simple calling all to a relationship with Christ.  KGB officers came to Christ under his preaching, when he first preached in Russia, as well as obscure citizens there.  Hundreds of millions of people came to Christ during his over 60 years of ministry.  Tapes of his sermons still are broadcasted and people are still being saved by them.  While returning from vacation in Florida, we visited “The Cove”, Billy Graham’s Christian training retreat in Asheville, North Carolina.  The visitor guide showed us the calling center that are manned to council and lead callers to Christ after each broadcast.

Billy Graham was not perfect and his family struggled with his absence, putting additional burdens on his wife, Ruth, to put most of the effort to raising their family.  But God honored their faithfulness to each other and to Christ and raised their children to know and love Christ and continue the legacy Billy and Ruth left.

God gave them opportunity and gifts beyond ours, but God will honor our faithfulness with an eternal impact if we obey.  Obey in deed and obey in money donations to His work, but mostly faithful in our daily relationship with Him.  I’m sure Billy and Ruth could not imagine how God would used them, but obeyed one day at a time.  We can’t either but God wants us to obey and draw closer to Him each day too.  If we do, we still may not impact the world like Billy did, but who knows?  If we can impact just one for Christ, that would be enough.  We are not expected to compete with Billy’s legacy.  God’s plan for us is different but no less important to Him!! Why?  Because you and I are just as important to Him as is Billy and Ruth Graham, and so is the work He is calling us to…  AMEN?  AMEN!!
