Things That Last

Deut 8,11-20You shall remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth.

Deuteronomy 8:18

Herbert Taylor, an unassuming businessman in Chicago, was behind many of the great student ministry movements in the twentieth century. Having made a fortune as a manufacturer, Taylor shared his talents and treasures to further the Lord’s work. He helped establish scores of evangelistic organizations. And he was behind the purchase of the Cedar Campus for InterVarsity on Lake Huron.

RECOMMENDED  READING: DEUT. 8:11-20  “11 Beware that thou forget not the Lord thy God, in not keeping his commandments, and his judgments, and his statutes, which I command thee this day:12 Lest when thou hast eaten and art full, and hast built goodly houses, and dwelt therein13 And when thy herds and thy flocks multiply, and thy silver and thy gold is multiplied, and all that thou hast is multiplied;14 Then thine heart be lifted up, and thou forget the Lord thy God, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage;15 Who led thee through that great and terrible wilderness, wherein were fiery serpents, and scorpions, and drought, where there was no water; who brought thee forth water out of the rock of flint;16 Who fed thee in the wilderness with manna, which thy fathers knew not, that he might humble thee, and that he might prove thee, to do thee good at thy latter end;17 And thou say in thine heart, My power and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth.18 But thou shalt remember the Lord thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day.19 And it shall be, if thou do at all forget the Lord thy God, and walk after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I testify against you this day that ye shall surely perish.20 As the nations which the Lord destroyeth before your face, so shall ye perish; because ye would not be obedient unto the voice of the Lord your God.”

COMMENTS: Herbert Taylor was a successful businessman in Chicago but is also well known for his generosity.  He was key in funding and organizing many important student ministry movements which have had eternal impact on students and campuses and communities.  He built Cedar Lodge in 1954 was completed when remaining $10,000 check was received from him, money he received has honorarium as president of Rotary International.  He gave sacrificially and never considered income as earned by as a gift from God which he was responsible to use wisely and as God desired.

Arlene and I will be celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary next month.  As we look at our wedding pictures amazed at how young we looked and how quickly the years have passed, we also realize we have fewer years left than have lived, so importance of living wisely is even more important.  We are reflecting on priorities we need to spend those years and resources God places in our hands.  That is why our focus is on this devotion and sharing it with as many as can along with helping a good number of pastors in other countries share it.  But also to be responsible in our own community and home church too and to our family.

Acquiring things for our enjoyment are becoming less important and using our time and money to help show and build a legacy to eternal life for ourselves, our family, others who know us, and beyond is becoming an increasing priority for us.  Are you discovering this in your life too?  Then we invite you to seek His council and help to spend less and give more.  To spend less time and money building and acquiring for yourself and spend and giving more time and money in ways He desires.  We are finding great freedom and joy in that journey and know you will too. A journey of faith not without risks and sacrifice but a journey to obedience and deeper relationship with Christ.

Jim Elliott, a missionary who gave his life early in that work said “He is no fool who g ives up what he cannot keep in order to gain what he cannot loose”.  His brief life transformed th Indian tribe who killed him into Christ followers who are sharing Christ’s Good News to tribes they once were at war with.  We have no idea how God will use what we do and give to Him. BUT IT WILL BE WELL WORTH ANY SACRIFICE AND MORE PRECIOUS TO US AND HIM THAN ANYTHING WE GIVE UP!  AMEN?  AMEN!

“We are trustees of every material thing we possess. We are obligated to use money for the things that last, rather than for the things that perish. “  Herbert Taylor
