“When Not to Rejoice”

Ps 56,8[Love] does not rejoice in iniquity.   1 Corinthians 13:6a

SCRIPTURE:  ROMANS 12:9-16  “Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.10 Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another;11 Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord;12 Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer;13 Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality.14 Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not.15 Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.16 Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.”             COMMENTS:  Being a Christian is all about being in relationship with God while also being in relationship with others.  God has the ultimate goal of being in relationship with you and me while also being in relationship with others.  His relationship and interest and attention to us is not diminished because of equal attention to others.  But how and when He responds to our needs and prayers is affected by how answering them will affect others.  Only He can orchestrate a perfect response that best meets the needs of all.  The above scripture reveals to us how God thinks and wants us to think.  To put others ahead of ourselves and show compassion to others instead of meeting our needs at cost to others.  Love does not rejoice in misfortune and failings of others but in God’s blessings to others even when we are enduring pain or suffering or loss or disappointment.  When is the last time you were able to listen and respond to another while struggling with personal distress?  When is the last time something wonderful happened to you but restrained expressing it because another was suffering.  Instead you focused on their problem and rendered support and focus on their need first.

Why is it so important to rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep no matter what our state of mind or condition is?  Why did Christ have compassion on people no matter if going through the best or worst situations, including enduring great temptation in the wilderness or consequence for our sins on the cross?  Could it be the relationship we have with others is that important and that vital to the wellbeing of others as well as ourselves?  Could it be our relationship with God is also dependent on our relationship with others?  Could it be other’s relationship with God is affected by our relationship with them?

Next time you and I think our relationship with our family or neighbors or even strangers is a distraction to our relationship with God, maybe we should reflect on this scripture and consider how God wants to use us to draw someone closer to Himself while drawing closer to you and me.  Yes, we all need daily alone time with God.  Even Christ needed time alone with the Father to refresh.  But our relationship with God is not complete in isolation only either.  Our relationship with God will guide our relationship with others if we simply stop and listen and obey…
